3/30/2023 0 Comments Forspoken main charactersIt doesn’t help that Forsaken’s narrative is also a bit of a slow burn, and I’m not talking about the noticeable delay in conversations after each character talks. But like the game’s main protagonist, these powerful moments can also get sabotaged by some of the game’s own issues whether it be visual hiccups or the poorly written dialogue of some of the game’s side characters. These are moments when Forsaken’s story and characters shine. It was just heartbreaking to see him struggle at recalling his old ideas as he would exhibit flashes of his old brilliance before turning into an old child. Another character - a former Athian genius now struggling to keep his mental faculties that have been eroded by a slowly encroaching condition caused by the corruption - reminded me of people I know who are dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. But for folks who have either experienced it or know someone who has struggled with mental health and how it changes a person, it can actually be quite powerful. The emotional ranting of a Tanta might come across as unhinged, horrible dialogue for folks who have never dealt with these issues. These include challenging topics that can be difficult to address such as emotional trauma, one’s perception of self worth, and, in the case of the game’s Tanta leaders, the impact of mental illness. It is quite sad how a group of strong, powerful and kind women end up as these unstable characters due to things that are out of their control. Ultimately, all the attention caused by the overuse of profanity is sad because it ultimately serves as a distraction from what is actually a diverse and compelling story hidden underneath all the noise.Īs much as Forspoken gets dinged for mostly telling instead of showing, I think it actually tackles some serious issues, which it deserves some credit for. I also like Frey as a flawed character who’s obviously trying to turn her life around while also making things right, not just for herself but, eventually, for others as well. But I think that’s actually one of the things that makes Forspoken refreshing compared to others in the genre. Some might decry modern lingo in a fantasy game. The last thing I want is for my nephew to start swearing like a tiny little 3-foot-tall sailor after all.Īll that being said, I actually don’t have a problem with Frey talking the way she does minus the over indulgence in profanity. I can’t even count the number of times that my nephew walked in to watch his uncle playing a game and Frey drops an F-bomb that’s just about as perfectly timed as Luke Skywalker’s Death Star trench run. I also have a toddler in my house, by the way, which made Frey’s flowery language even more obvious. If you notice the saltiness, it probably means you added too much. It’s like adding salt to sweet desserts to enhance the flavor. But as with many things, overdoing it makes it seem like the game is trying too hard to be edgy. There is certainly a difference in using a certain amount of profanity to make the dialogue feel more real. To be fair, 100% of it comes from just one character. But that person also happens to be the main character who drives most of the conversations in the game. It’s a bit unfortunate as a lot of those stem from Frey’s personality and way of speaking as opposed to a fundamental issue with the overarching narrative itself.Īnyway, yes, Forspoken uses a lot of swearing. When people say they have a problem with Forsaken’s story, however, it almost always involves Frey’s dialogue - more specifically, the way she talks. They can be worth a mild chuckle most of the time but can also break your immersion and ruin even the most poignant scenes. Unnatural mouth movements, for example, can make characters look janky. Other issues don’t stem from the story itself but from its delivery instead. These include the use of storytelling tropes as well as character caricatures and cheesy dialogue that can feel lazy or unimaginative at times. Some of the criticism is certainly justified as the narrative has its share of issues. More on this (bleep) later.Īdding to Frey’s woes is the fact that she finds herself unwillingly bonded with an enchanted talking vambrace that she disparagingly calls “Cuff.” This leads to the fantasy equivalent of a buddy-cop adventure as Frey and Cuff unravel the secrets behind the miasma that’s corrupting the land and turning Athia’s inhabitants into monsters.Īdmittedly, Forspoken’s story has been quite polarizing - some people like it while others just absolutely hate it. This, by the way, would be the 11th time that Frey would utter profanity within the first five minutes of arriving in the world of Athia. Things don’t go as planned, however, and Frey ultimately finds herself face to face with - in her own words - a mother (bleeping) dragon just two days later.
